Job Description
The Patent Paralegal is an integral part of the Baxter's IP Department service delivery function and is responsible for supporting three or more Patent Attorneys and the business development team and will:
Coordinate all aspects of filing domestic and international patent applications
Monitor and track domestic and foreign filing deadlines and ensure that all deadlines are met in a timely manner;
Maintain docket for the attorneys
Work closely with Outside Counsels and internal personnel
Assist in completion of IP group projects as requested
Participate in due diligence process; on-line searches utilizing various databases (PAIR, EPO, WIPO, Delphion)
Job Requirements
• Ability to create action plans and executes procedures and processes to support senior paralegals and attorneys
•General understanding of legal environment and resources
•Ability to work closely with others within and outside of the organization to gather information from diverse groups and collates, summarize and organize information
•Attention to detail
•Ability to work independently on repetitive tasks
•Ability to work well under a team structure
•Must have basic knowledge of word processing programs to be able to understand data base systems
•Well-developed communication skills, both written and verbal, and good research and analytical skills
•Ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines
Education and Experience:
•Typically an entry level position
•Typically have 2 years of college, and paralegal certification or 4 or more specialty paralegal courses and at least 2 years of legal experience Preferred Qualifications:
Paralegal Certification and minimum of 5 years patent prosecution experience
Experience with IP technologies
Superbly organized and extremely detail oriented
Technology savvy professional with an ability to actively learn and utilize proprietary software (IP database); proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Possess strong verbal and writing communication skills, excellent time-management and organizational skills; ability to prioritize and follow through on assignments to completion with limited supervision
Experience in the filing and administration of patent portfolios
Possess a working knowledge of domestic and international patent rules and regulations and their application; timelines, deadlines and required documentation
Able to work collaboratively, think creatively and take initiative
Flexible and able to work independently under tight deadlines; handle multiple tasks, and respond quickly to changing priorities
