SPEECH THERAPIST

SUMMARY:

To evaluate patients regarding the application of a wide variety of therapeutic techniques for rehabilitation of speech, language, hearing and oral motor disorders and dysphagia.

 

POPULATION SERVED:

Core competencies will be assessed primarily on the following patient population(s) served: Cardiac/cardiovascular neuro, pulmonary, oncology, GI conditions and diseases including but not limited to developmental delays, CVA/TIA, dysphagia, etc.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.      Conducts a subjective assessment of assigned patient's speech language abilities during spontaneous conversation. Administers objective tests to assess patient's communication assets and liabilities.

2.      Compares results to standardized data to evaluate communicative function.

3.      Structures, implements and evaluates program to improve communication abilities.

4.      Completes and participates in tasks related to quality improvement.

5.      Completes assigned non-clinical duties when the need arises.

6.      Documentation: Evaluates patient's records and documents progress in patient's chart daily. Completes notes, charges, discharge notes and patient communication.

7.      Implements quality assessment and improvement plan and submits results to the Senior Speech Pathologist on a timely basis.

8.      Demonstrates Customer Service/Service plus principles and behaviors consistent with Del Sol Rehabilitation Hospital Health Care System vision and values.

9.      Other duties as assigned.

  

Qualifications

 

 

EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED: (list required and preferred separately)

MA or MS in Speech Pathology required - ASHA certified university preferred.  

 

 

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: (list required and preferred separately)

Certificate of Clinical Competency by the American Speech Language Hearing Association. . Current state of Texas licensure and CPR certification required.

 Must also have completed CFY.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED:  (list required and preferred separately)

            Minimum 1-2 clinical experience as a speech pathologist preferred. 

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of and experience with the evaluation of patients with speech, language or dysphagia disorders especially with a geriatric emphasis.

Knowledge of speech therapy principles and practices; oral and pharyngeal.

Comprehensive knowledge of the muscular and nervous systems and general anatomy and physiology. Knowledge of disease and post surgery conditions which inhibit speech, language and swallowing functions.

Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.

Knowledge of medical terminology.

            Successful completion of transfer training.

Ability to deal with handicapped persons and to motivate them to comply with a therapy program required for recovery.

Ability to visualize the anatomical structure of the brain, oral, pharyngeal and respiratory system and to take appropriate remedial action.

Ability to form conclusions reflecting patient's progress based on sensory, judgmental, measurable and verifiable criteria, indicated by their reaction to therapy activities.

            Skill in the operation of different modalities within the department

 

**The ideal candidate will have at least 1-2 years of rehabilitation, home health or educational environment experience as a Speech Language Pathologist; however, we do accept new graduates from an ASHA accredited Masters of Science Speech Language Pathology program.  Bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates are preferred.
